Mack Brown Dismissed as North Carolina Football Coach After Six Seasons in Second Tenure
The University of North Carolina announced Tuesday that it has parted ways with head football coach Mack Brown, six seasons into his second stint with the Tar Heels.
Brown is set to coach the team in their season finale against North Carolina State, but the school has not yet decided whether he will lead the team in any postseason games.
The news comes just a day after Brown stated his intention to return as head coach in 2025. Following a 70-50 home loss to James Madison in non-conference play, Brown had clarified that he was not resigning despite earlier comments suggesting he might step aside if the team's issues remained unresolved.
In a statement, Brown addressed the timing of his departure: “While this is not the perfect time or way I imagined leaving, no time will ever feel perfect. For now, my complete focus is on helping our players and coaches prepare for Saturday’s game against N.C. State and giving them the best chance to succeed.”
